Grade Levels

Overnight Field Trips

At Desert Shadows we support the importance of hands-on field trips and promote participation by all students. With that overnight trips are held annually for all students in grades 3 through 6.

Third graders travel to the Phoenix Zoo; typically departing from the school at 5:00 p.m. and returning the next day by noon. Their night is filled with courses and activities as they learn about the many animals housed at the zoo.

Fourth-grade students hit the road for rafting down the Colorado River and a visit to the Grand Canyon.

In fifth grade, we venture to AstroCamp in California. Here, students do various STEAM-related activities and evening programs.

Sixth graders load buses, and travel to Long Beach where they load a ferry headed for Catalina Island for 2 nights on the island and hands-on study of life in and near the ocean.

Preschool at DSES

Montessori Preschool: DSES Montessori Preschool Program is based on the principles of Dr. Maria Montessori. Students in the program engage in critical thinking, discovery, and creative invention in a unique setting that fosters growth. The class is taught by an experienced Montessori-certified teacher.

SUN (Serving Unique Needs) Kids Preschool: DSES SUN Kids Preschool is a dedicated, inclusive Preschool program that focuses on child-directed, rather than teacher-directed, activities that help students grow and develop alongside their peers.

Hands-on STEAM is a big emphasis at Desert Shadows throughout every school year, with special programs for each grade level. This includes quarterly STEAM projects, STEAM based field trip, STEAM assemblies, STEAM nights, and a school-wide STEAM project. Furthermore, our 6th graders compete in the District Science and Engineering Fair with winners heading to the Arizona State Science and Engineering Fair.
